Bruce Johnston - Surfin Round the World

Bruce Johnston had quite a prolific recording career prior to being tabbed as a Beach Boy of the future, and this self-produced effort was one of the more notable installments. From the "Twistin' U.S.A."-styled knockoff title song, this is a really fun album, despite the rigidness of the concept inherent in the title. Noisy tracks like "Hot Pastrami, Mashed Potatoes, Come on to Rincon-Yeah!!!" sit nicely next to the jazzy but rockin' "Surf Nova," the eerie but beautiful instrumental "Maksha at Midnight," the gas'n'go romp of "Capetown," and the experimental fuzz ravers "Jersey Channel Islands, Pt. 7" and "Virginia Beach." Even portents of Johnston's future rear their stylistic heads on "The Hamptons" and "Surfin's Here to Stay.

There are quite a few instumentals, but I feel that the songs are good enough. My favourite is The Hamptons

The Beach Boys - Sound of Summer

Inspired by the creative genius of Brian Wilson, the group’s main songwriter, producer, composer and arranger, the Beach Boys summed up a world of teenage yearning. Dreams of flashy cars, first kisses, holiday romance – and Fun with a capital F – were all served up as three-minute slices of life, with five voices in perfect harmony and sophisticated chord changes which became the band’s trademark sound.

Ronny and the Daytonas - LandLocked

Whoa dad! Smell that rubber burn!! When Ronny & The Daytonas cut "G.T.O.", the all-time 'turn it on, wind it up, blow it out' hot rod classi, and an album of similar nitro-burning 1964 scorchers, it was clear the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean had no monopoly on rubber-burning dragstrip rock. For that matter, the Daytonas' second LP, Sandy. named for their 1965 chart smash, proved they took a backseat to no one when it came to lush, ocean-flecked tales of summertime heartbreak. Songs so real you can almost hear the screeching tires...or the squawking seagulls!

Surf Bunnies & Hot Rod Honeys - Various

One of two great collections (possibly bootlegged?) of Gary Usher influenced California music, released a few years ago. This collection is just amazing - 32 tracks of surf and hot rod songs from the early 60s featuring female vocals. Many of these were originally released just as two sides of a 45, and are pretty much unknown other than that. Names like Donna Loren, the Surf Bunnies, and Susan Lynne might be familiar from other collections, but there's a ton that I've never seen or heard anywhere else. Surprisingly the Honeys don't show up here at all, but it wouldn't be too surprising if one or more of the acts on here was actually the Honeys under one of their many names. I thought it was the Honeys doing the vocals on Hal Blaine's Dance To The Surfing Band, which is included here. The Majorettes do a catchy ode to surfer guy couture in their song White Levis. And in the very next track the Sea Shells offer a rousing tribute called Love Those Beach Boys, singing "rah rah rah, be true to the Beach Boys!" Another song I can't get out of my head is the Delicates' Black & White Thunderbird, with a jumping beat and fun lyrics about cruising and picking up friends. And if you haven't heard the Surf Bunny Beach by the Surf Bunnies, or Don't Drag No More by Susan Lynne, you've gotta - they're both great combinations of California surf sound with great girl vocals. But then, so is the rest!

The Boys Next Door - The Boys Next Door

The Boys Next Door

The Boys Next Door were true contemporaries of the Beach Boys; not only did they perform around the same time (1964-1967), this Indianpolis group of friends patterned their entire sound and appearance around their west coast doppelgangers. But The Boys Next Door weren’t a simple cover band, they wrote and performed their own material, which payed obvious homage (and sometimes outright theft) to the Beach Boys’ sound. In fact, listening to the first three tracks, you might be hard-pressed to distinguish between this group and Brian Wilson’s songs. But then this group does a great thing - by track four you hear them begin to develop an individual sound, which although it keeps the four-part harmonies and songwriting prowess, but begins to stretch out past the cars and girls sensibilities of their early records.
